🔆 ABOUT THE FABRIC
The company Bernard Wardle started in the 1930s and produced a variety of designs in cotton chintz along with hand and roller-printed linen for interiors from their base in Stockport, Greater Manchester.
Colourfast dyes were introduced in the 1950s which enabled the company to use vibrant colours in new popular patterns. By the 1960s, Bernard Wardle had become well known for producing high-quality fabric and printing for Heals using designers such as Robert Dodd, Colleen Farr, Elizabeth Tuff, Janet Taylor, and Natalie Gibson. Edward Pond was design director from 1962-65 introducing a series of great designs.
🔆 AZUMA means: "east". It is said that Azuma bags originated in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1867) when common people, who saw bags carried by Westerners, imitated them by sewing together furoshiki and tenugui cloth (traditional Japanese cotton cloth used for carrying things).
🔆 SUSTAINABLE: This product has been made from fabric offcuts that would otherwise end up in a landfill.
